University of Iowa, Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic

The University of Iowa accepts self-referrals and referrals from pediatricians, teachers, and other speech-language pathologists. Evaluations and therapy resources are available for language and/or speech delays; language-related learning problems; and articulation and phonological disorders. 

Early ACCESS, Iowa Family Support Agency

Early ACCESS is Iowa’s early intervention system (IDEA Part C) for infants and toddlers under 3 years old who are not developing as expected or who have a medical condition that can delay typical development. Families and Early ACCESS staff work together to identify, coordinate and provide needed services and resources that help families assist their infants and toddlers in their growth and development. 

Child Find, Iowa IDEA

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) federally mandates identification of children from 3-21yrs who may struggle in school. Child Find acts as the initial response team to determine if your child is suspected of having a disability and if the disability is eligible for services. 

Area Education Agencies (AEA), Iowa Department of Education

Area Education Agencies are government entities who are responsible for identifying children with special needs and for providing resources within the public school system and community. Each region in Iowa has their own designated AEA office where you contact to find information on Early ACCESS, Child Find, and instructional facilities and programs for special education.
